What your results mean

Higher download and upload numbers are better. Lower ping and jitter are better.

Download

How fast data reaches you, in megabits per second (Mbps). This is what makes web pages load and videos stream smoothly.

Upload

How fast you can send data, in Mbps. It matters for video calls, backups and uploading files or photos to your website.

Ping & jitter

Ping is the round-trip delay in milliseconds (ms). Jitter is how much that delay changes. Low, steady numbers feel snappy.

This test measures the connection between your device and GreaterLink’s web servers. Wi-Fi, other devices on your network and distance can all affect the results, so numbers may differ from tests that use other servers.

Guide

What is a good internet speed?

It depends on what you do online and how many people share the connection. The U.S. Federal Communications Commission’s broadband benchmark is 100 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload. Here’s a rough guide for a single device:

What you’re doingDownload speed that feels good
Email, browsing and social media10 Mbps or more
Streaming HD video10–25 Mbps per stream
Streaming 4K video25 Mbps or more per stream
Video calls (Zoom, Teams, FaceTime)10 Mbps or more, plus a few Mbps of upload
Online gamingSpeed matters less than low, steady ping (under about 50 ms)
A busy household or small office100 Mbps or more

These are general guidelines. Add up what everyone in your home or office does at the same time.

Getting a slower result than you pay for?

Try these before calling your internet provider.

Test on a cable

Wi-Fi is often the bottleneck. Plug a computer into your router with an Ethernet cable and test again.

Move closer to the router

Walls, floors and distance slow Wi-Fi down. Test in the same room as the router.

Pause other devices

Streaming, game downloads and backups on other devices share your connection.

Restart your modem and router

Unplug them for 30 seconds, plug them back in and wait a few minutes.

Test a few times

Speeds vary through the day. Test at different times, including evenings when networks are busiest.

Check your plan

Compare your results with the speed in your internet plan. If they’re far apart on a cable, call your provider.

Speed test FAQ

Is this internet speed test free?

Yes. The GreaterLink speed test is free, with no sign-up.

What does Mbps mean?

Megabits per second, the standard unit for internet speed. Higher is faster.

What is ping?

Ping, or latency, is how long data takes to make a round trip, in milliseconds. Lower is better, especially for video calls and gaming.

Why is my upload slower than my download?

Most home internet plans are built that way, because people download much more than they upload. Fiber plans often have matching upload and download speeds.

Why do different speed tests show different results?

Each test measures the path to its own servers. Distance, the route your data takes and how busy the network is all make a difference.

Does my internet speed affect my website?

Your home speed affects how fast you see websites. How fast your website loads for customers depends on your hosting. GreaterLink hosting uses fast NVMe storage; see our web hosting plans.
